THE SCIENCE, EXPLAINED

From stained cells to a measurable result.

SomaticScan uses fluorescence microscopy and automated image analysis to measure somatic cells in prepared raw milk samples.

01

What SCC means

Somatic cell count is the number of somatic cells per millilitre of milk. It is used as an indicator of udder inflammation and milk quality. Individual-cow results and bulk-tank results answer different questions.

02

How the cells are counted

The sample is stained and loaded into the specified chip. The microscope captures images, and software identifies and counts stained cells. Correct sampling and preparation remain essential.

03

What the result can tell you

An elevated SCC can flag a sample for further investigation and help track changes over time. It does not identify the causative pathogen or replace clinical assessment.
